Girl/Boy – Famous

You’re going to be famous when you grow up, aren’t you?; take this and draw the person you want to be, anyone you like; try making another picture, try again, try harder; now, be nice to the other children, or they won’t like you; if they don’t let you join in, they’re not your friends; if they won’t see you for who you are, they’re not worth bothering with; one day you’ll understand why this behaviour is not acceptable; if it looks like you’re going to get in a fight, just take a deep breath and walk away; I’m really trying, you need to try too; try what? I’m just being who I am; if you don’t leave her alone, I’ll … !; tell the truth, darling, tell the truth and it will all be okay, I promise; try to be good, and don’t forget about me; write to me whenever they let you, write soon.

  1. Really well written Alex!

I thought that “draw the person you want to be, anyone you like; try making another picture, try again, try harder” was particularly effective, as it shows how the girl is pushed from such a young age.
