Where the Cows Go to Heaven (Boy)

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you
ll miss me
While I
m alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Louis Armstrong – ‘Dream a Little Dream of Me’ (1931)

Geez, of all the stupid things to do, I mean wow, was Uncle Frankie gonna hide me good for this one. If I’m ever found that is. Wonder if the new butcher-boy knows how to open the freezer door . . . stupid, stupid, why’d I come here? Aw, yeah, the dare. Stupid Somerton, am gonna kill him when I get outta here! He’ll be takin’ a swim in the lake with cement shoes . . . dunno what that means but Uncle Frankie says it a lot. Just ‘cause Jackie’s pop owns the slaughterhouse where all the cows go to heaven – ma told me that, but Uncle Frankie just laughed at her so I dunno if it’s true or not. Ah, damn! Uncle Frankie was gonna take me to see that new talkie at the picture house – Frankensense . . . no wait, Frankenstein, it was Frankenstein. Uncle Frankie was gonna slip the manager some green to sneak me in. Aw, heck, it’s too dark in here; I don’t like being around dead things. My gum’s goin’ stale, must’ve been here a while, someone must be lookin’ for me . . .  so cold . . . yeah, yeah any minute now, the butcher-boy’s gonna open that door. Any minute now. . .
