Social behavior and individual cognition

When we try to explain social phenomena by means of psychological knowledge, we make a fundamental error. A group behaves differently from its members were they isolated – if we begin with individuals in trying to explain social phenomena, we shall be able to understand nothing of what takes place in the group (Durkenheim)
